Fallout from Lidia Thorpe’s Protest at Parliament House:-

The penultimate day of King Charles and queen Camila’s visit to Australia Today threatens to be overshadowed by the Fallout from Senator Lydia thorp’s protest at Parliament House the confrontation that saw the gai gjara and jabong woman and independent Senator escorted out of parliament yesterday afternoon has made headlines overseas including in the UK overnight The Clash has raised important questions back home about the devastating consequences colonization has had on first nation’s people the king and que have not commented on the incident and are back in Sydney we have our reporter miles Holbrook walk waiting at the Sydney Opera house but first to our political reporter Oliver Gordon OE it was quite the moment in Parliament House yesterday .

What’s been the reaction so far morning Bridget yeah what a moment it was in the Great Hall here at Parliament House uh King Charles had just finished his speech when independent Senator Lydia Thorp um began her protest let’s head back to the Great Hall and have a look at how it all unfolded from us our our skulls our babies our people you destroy our lands give us a treaty we want a treaty in this country you on and this is not your land this is not your land you are not my king you are not really um some pretty confronting scenes there in um Parliament House .

So far the reactions have been varied we’ve seen um supporters of Lydia Thorp label um the action brave but we’ve also seen um plenty of condemnation on the front page of the Australian for example um prominent indigenous academic Marcialton um has labeled uh the incident embarrassing and shameful um we’ve seen senators and MPS from the albanesi government and also the Coalition broadly uh labeling the action as inappropriate but we have we know for a long time Senator Thorp has uh held this position she wants to see a treaty and certainly that message is now spreading across the globe we have seen um the BBC uh cover this also uh headlines in the New York Times in the US.
